August To Do List

Prune Wisteria if it needs it – and it probably does! Wisteria requires regular pruning to keep the size/ growth under control and it will also improve the flowering display.

Tend to your Fuchsias for further bloom. Pinch out grapelike berries and nip out growing tips for a bushier plant. Fertilize and keep watered.

Sow vegetables for fall crop. This includes beets, Chinese cabbage, mustard, onion, radish, spinach, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower & broccoli.

Fertilize cucumbers, summer squash and broccoli while harvesting. This will maintain production. Harvest vegetables once edible to stimulate further production.

Harvest herbs. It’s best to do this in the morning just after dew dries for the freshest flavour. If you want to store some, dry the cut herbs on a screen in a shady place.

Don’t neglect your houseplants! Feed with a water-soluble fertilizer each time you water. Move away from intense, direct sun.

Strawberries: Lift and plant rooted runners for new plants next year.

Mulch: adding well composted manures or garden waste to you garden beds will help with water retention and replenishing nutrients in the soil.
